Founded in the 19th century, the Soon Tuck Wooi Kwon was established to provide support, networking, and a sense of community for immigrants from the Shunde (Shuntak) district in China. These "Wooi Kwons" were essential social hubs that helped newcomers find work, housing, and social security in Penang. The current building, as indicated by the date on its facade, was reconstructed or renovated in 1928. The Shunde community is famous globally for its culinary heritage, often referred to as the cradle of Cantonese cuisine, and many of its members in Penang were historically involved in the food and service industries.
