Volcan Mountain is part of southern California's peninsular range and is just outside of the town of Julian. Gold was discovered by former slave Fred Coleman on the southern slope of Volcan Mountain in 1869, spurring a subsequent gold rush to the area. The land was later going to be sold into luxury home lots in the 1980s, but the locals saved the area, and it's now designated as the Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve.
