Lake Silvaplana is located in the sunny Engadine region, between St. Moritz and Sils Maria in the Canton of Graubünden, Switzerland.
Nestled in the stunning landscape of the Upper Engadine, the lake is a true natural paradise. Surrounded by majestic mountains and dense forests, the lake captivates visitors with its crystal-clear, turquoise-blue waters and impressive mountains. Lake Silvaplana is not only a popular destination for those seeking relaxation, but also a meeting point for water sports enthusiasts. Due to the constant winds of Maloja, the lake is ideal for kitesurfers, windsurfers, and sailors. In summer, the lake shores invite long walks and bike rides, while in winter the icy surface transforms into a vast natural ice field.
It is worth noting that the Inn River, which originates in the Piz Lunghin mountain north of the Maloja pass, first feeds the lakes of Sils and Silvaplana, continuing its course into Lake St. Moritz. The Inn is an important river in the Alps that runs through Switzerland, Austria, and Germany and flows into the Danube at Passau.
In the summer of 1879, Friedrich Nietzsche visited Engadine for the first time and established his summer residence in the picturesque landscape of Sils Maria.
It was here, at Lake Silvaplana, that Friedrich Nietzsche, sitting on a rock called Nietzsche's Stone, immersed himself in his thoughts, finding inspiration for his philosophical works. It was there that he conceived the idea of "eternal return"—a central concept of his masterpiece "Thus Spoke Zarathustra." Nietzsche's Stone continues to attract philosophy enthusiasts from all over the world, and this Stone is located here around Lake Silvaplana.
