Exterior view of the Iglesia de San Francisco de la Montaña, a Catholic church in San Francisco de la Montaña in Veraguas Province, Panamá. This Baroque-style church is the second oldest church in country, dating from 1630 & becoming a national historic monument in 1941. The church has a rather modest exterior. It features a low, white-painted tower, which houses the bell tower and serves as the main entrance. It also has two side entrances covered by eaves supported by brick columns. The simplicity of the exterior contrasts sharply with the artistic richness of its interior.
The church features several hand-carved altarpieces that display a great cultural syncretism. Among the most notable altarpieces are the altarpiece of the Immaculate Conception, which has 192 pieces; the altarpiece of the Passion, that of Saint Anthony, and that of the Souls in Purgatory, each with 120 pieces. The presence of Churrigueresque Baroque is undeniable in these, but there is a notable indigenous influence in the carved motifs. In 2007, the church underwent an exhaustive restoration, and these altarpieces were dismantled piece by piece. One of the most elaborate was the main altar, which has 480 pieces.
