Established in 1964 alongside the State Museum, the Penang State Art Gallery was the first of its kind to be set up by a state government in Malaysia. Originally housed on Farquhar Street, the art collection was moved to this dedicated facility on Macalister Road to provide more space for its growing permanent collection.
The gallery serves as a vital platform for local artists, featuring a diverse range of media including oil paintings, watercolors, and sculptures. It is particularly famous for its extensive collection of works by the "Father of Malaysian Modern Art," Yong Mun Sen, as well as regular temporary exhibitions that highlight the evolving contemporary art scene in Penang.
