Penang Hainan Association
Malaysia
Founded in 1866, the Penang Hainan Association served as a vital support network for the Hainanese community who arrived in Penang later than other Chinese dialect groups. Because earlier immigrants had already established themselves in trade, many Hainanese specialized in the service and hospitality industries, famously influencing Penang's culinary scene. The current temple building on Muntri Street was completed in 1895 and underwent a massive restoration in 1995 to commemorate its centenary. It is dedicated to Mazu, the protector of fishermen and sailors, reflecting the Hainanese people's history as seafaring islanders. The association remains one of the most active in Penang, particularly during the Mazu's birthday celebrations and the Lunar New Year.
