Completed in 1907, the Malayan Railway Building served a unique purpose: it functioned as a railway station for passengers crossing from Penang Island to the mainland. Since there were no tracks on the island, passengers would buy their tickets here and then board a ferry to the Butterworth railway station to continue their journey by train.
Architecturally, it is one of the grandest colonial buildings in Penang, featuring a mix of Edwardian and classical styles. After the railway administration moved, the building served as the Customs House (Wisma Kastam) for many years. Today, it remains a protected heritage site within the UNESCO zone, symbolizing Penang's historical role as a critical regional transportation link.
