The Logan Memorial was erected in 1873 in honor of James Richardson Logan, a Scottish lawyer and polymath who became a legendary figure in 19th-century Penang. Logan was deeply respected by all ethnic communities for his work as a "People’s Lawyer," often defending the rights of locals against oppressive colonial regulations.
Beyond his legal work, he was a brilliant ethnologist and the founder of the Journal of the Indian Archipelago and Eastern Asia. He is also credited with popularizing the name "Indonesia" as a geographic term. This memorial was funded entirely by public subscriptions from the local community—a rare tribute to a European during that era—demonstrating the profound impact he had on the people of Penang.
