The island’s name and fame come from a poignant local legend.
The Legend of the Pregnant Maiden: A celestial princess named Mambang Sari once fell in love with a mortal man, Mat Teja. They married and had a son, but tragically, the baby died shortly after birth. Heartbroken, the princess laid her child to rest in the deep waters of the lake and returned to her heavenly abode.
Before leaving, she blessed the lake with fertility powers, and locals still believe that women who bathe in or drink its waters will be blessed with a child. If you look at the island's mountain ridgeline from the sea, the silhouette remarkably resembles the profile of a pregnant woman lying on her back.
