Crumlin Road Gaol North Side
UK

Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast is a historic Victorian-era prison that operated from 1846 to 1996. Built from dark basalt stone, it held men, women, and children under harsh conditions. The facility witnessed executions, escapes, hunger strikes, and civil unrest during its long history. Divided by era and class, inmates faced overcrowding and severe punishment. The tunnel linking the prison to the courthouse across the street is a striking feature. Crumlin Road Gaol also played a role during The Troubles, holding political prisoners from both sides of the conflict. Its walls reflect a complex and often grim chapter of Irish history.
