Bukit Guar Sami
Malaysia
Bukit Guar Sami is a place where nature, religion, and local legends intertwine. The name "Guar Sami" (Monk’s Hill) is rooted in local history; it is believed that a Siamese temple once existed within an open-air cave on the hill, where Buddhist monks (sami) lived, meditated, and treated the sick. The hill was later renamed Bukit Cenderawasih by the Perlis state government because it was once a primary habitat for the legendary Bird of Paradise (Burung Cenderawasih). Geologically, it is part of the Chuping Formation, a limestone sequence dating back roughly 260 to 280 million years. Once an island surrounded by the ancient sea, the hill now stands as a beloved recreational landmark where locals come to challenge themselves on the steep trails or enjoy the serene Taman Bunga Kertas (Paper Flower Park) at its base.
