Nagore Dargha Sheriff
Malaysia
Built around 1800–1803, the Nagore Dargha Sheriff is recognized as the oldest Indian Muslim shrine in Penang. It was established by Chulias (Tamil Muslim traders and moneylenders) from South India who were among the earliest settlers in George Town. The shrine is dedicated to Syed Shahul Hamid, a revered 13th-century Sufi saint from Nagore, Tamil Nadu. While it contains no bodily relics, it serves as a memorial replica of the original dargah in India. For over two centuries, it has remained a vital center for the Tamil Muslim community, hosting annual "urs" festivals and serving as a symbol of the multicultural harmony that defines Penang’s heritage.
