Ayer Hangat Village
Malaysia
The Legend of the Feuding Giants According to local folklore, the hot springs were created during a colossal brawl between two giant families, the Mat Cincang and Mat Raya, during a wedding feast. In the heat of the argument, pots and pans were thrown across the island. A large jug of boiling gravy (kuah) was overturned, and the place where it spilled became the town of Kuah, while the spot where the boiling water fell formed the Ayer Hangat (Hot Water) springs. Scientific & Cultural Significance Scientifically, the springs are formed by geothermal pressure heating sedimentary rocks beneath the island. It is one of only four natural saltwater hot springs in the world. Today, the village is a modern complex featuring three-tier wells, private jacuzzis, and an 18-meter-high riverstone mural depicting the legend.
